Artists use any space to express their inner world by combining different shades and shapes. The term “urban art” was coined at the end of the 90s and is currently used to describe those expressive artistic designs which are found in various urban spaces such as on the walls of buildings.
This artistic movement also includes graffiti, but it shouldn’t be confused as one is not the same as the other. Many people use graffiti to leave their mark illegally on public spaces, which could be seen as vandalism rather than art. However, the concept of street art and graffiti has two completely different connotations. Urban art seeks to express what is happening in society through different drawings, whereas graffiti is represented more by symbols, or code between different groups.
Both are valid forms of art, given they are on display outdoors, however, one is usually approved of by authorities whereas the other is regarded as an illegal activity. Depending on the nuances, and especially where these art works are carried out, it can cross a fine line between art and vandalism.
